Just a few examples of the incredible work produced by my students in our “Big 5 Postcards” lesson! Students were prompted to create a postcard they could use to teach someone about one of the Big 5 trees, even if they’ve never seen one in person!

IMG_6379.jpgA piece of student work: Wester [Red] Cedar. This student really focused in on the writing elements of the work, writing in clear full sentences that captured the essence of their tree. This is a great example of how students were able to combine their notes and in-person observations to describe their trees.  IMG_6374.jpg

Student work: Western Red Cedar. This piece of art was completed by a student who is extremely passionate about art but had a harder time with the writing portion. By allowing students to work at their own pace, this student was able to complete the writing section fully before focusing their energy on water-coloring.IMG_6380.jpgStudent work: Red Alder “Tree.” I was amazed when I saw how this student represented the bark and wood of the Red Alder (white/grey on the outside and red on the inside). This student explained that they wanted to demonstrate both aspects of color by showing a “chunk” that was taken out of the tree. (So cool!)
